Your washing machine works hard to keep your clothes clean, but did you know it also needs regular cleaning? Over time, detergent residue, dirt, and moisture can cause bad odors, mold, and even performance problems. Keeping your washer clean helps extend its life and ensures your laundry always comes out fresh.

Why Washer Cleaning Matters

  • Removes odor-causing buildup: Soap scum and lint can create unpleasant smells.

  • Prevents mold and bacteria: Especially in front-load washers where moisture lingers.

  • Improves washing performance: A clean washer cleans clothes more effectively.

  • Extends machine lifespan: Reduces wear and tear caused by residue buildup.

  • Saves money: Prevents costly repairs and improves energy efficiency.

Step by Step

  • Run a cleaning cycle: Use hot water with 2 cups of white vinegar to break down residue.

  • Scrub the rubber gasket: Wipe around the door seal with a mix of vinegar and baking soda.

  • Clean the detergent drawer: Remove and wash it with warm water and mild soap.

  • Rinse with baking soda: Run another hot cycle with ½ cup of baking soda for a deep clean.

  • Wipe dry: Leave the door open after each wash to prevent mold growth.

How Often Should You Clean Your Washer?

For most homes, cleaning once a month keeps your washer in top shape. If you use it daily or have hard water, consider cleaning it every two weeks to prevent buildup.

If you notice slow drainage, leaks, or foul smells that won’t go away, it might be time to call a professional plumber.
