Few plumbing problems are as frustrating as pressing the flush handle only to have nothing happen, or worse, having the water rise instead of going down. Toilets can stop flushing for several reasons, ranging from minor issues to plumbing problems that require professional help.

In this article, we’ll walk you through the most common causes, how to troubleshoot, and when to call a plumber.

Common Reasons a Toilet Won’t Flush

Clogged Toilet

The most common reason is a blockage in the trap or drain pipe, often caused by:

  • Too much toilet paper

  • Non-flushable items like wipes or feminine products

  • Small foreign objects (kids’ toys are a common culprit)

Low Water Level in the Tank

If your tank doesn’t have enough water, the flush won’t have the power to move waste.

Broken Flush Handle or Chain

The handle may be loose, or the chain that lifts the flapper may have disconnected.

Flapper Problems

A worn or misaligned flapper can prevent proper flushing.

How to Fix a Toilet That Won’t Flush

Step 1: Check for a Clog

Use a plunger to try to clear the blockage. If that doesn’t work, a toilet auger (plumbing snake) can help.

Step 2: Check the Water Level

Remove the tank lid and see if the water is at least one inch below the overflow tube. Adjust the float if needed.

Step 3: Inspect the Handle and Chain

Reconnect or tighten any loose parts inside the tank.

Step 4: Replace the Flapper if Needed

If it’s warped or damaged, replacing it is a quick and inexpensive fix.

How to Prevent Future Flushing Problems

  • Only flush toilet paper and waste.

  • Avoid “flushable” wipes, they’re not truly flushable.

  • Teach children what not to flush.

  • Schedule annual plumbing inspections.

When to Call a Plumber

If your toilet still won’t flush after troubleshooting, the blockage might be deeper in your plumbing system or sewer line. A professional plumber can quickly diagnose and fix the problem before it causes bigger issues.
