A cracked toilet tank isn’t just annoying, it can lead to serious water damage if not handled quickly. But is it something you can fix yourself, or should you just replace the tank altogether? Let’s explore your options.
What Causes a Toilet Tank to Crack?
Toilet tanks can crack from a variety of reasons, including:
Age and wear: Older porcelain tanks may weaken over time.
Improper installation: Overtightened bolts can stress the porcelain.
Impact: Dropping a heavy object on the tank lid can create cracks.
Thermal shock: Pouring hot water into a cold tank can cause it to crack.
There are two types of cracks. Hairline cracks that may not leak right away, and visible, leaking cracks that require immediate attention.
Can You Repair a Toilet Tank Crack?
Yes, but only small, non-leaking hairline cracks on the outside of the tank can sometimes be patched as a temporary fix. If the crack is:
Small and on the exterior surface
Not actively leaking
Located away from bolt holes or major stress points
A waterproof epoxy or porcelain repair kit may offer a temporary solution.
When Should You Replace the Tank?
You should replace the tank if:
The crack is leaking water.
The crack is on the inside of the tank.
The repair doesn’t hold, or worsens over time.
Mold or water damage starts forming around the toilet.
In many cases, replacing the entire toilet may be more cost-effective, especially if it’s an older model.
Some minor cracks can be patched, but most toilet tank cracks indicate it’s time for a replacement. Don’t wait for a leak to damage your bathroom floor, get it inspected quickly.
